People find their way to the Wild Hare Club by different routes, sometimes fairly circuitous ones. There are some artists who I actively seek out and then persuade to play, (a bit of charm goes a long way as my mother used to say, or occasionally I will badger them to the point where it’s easier for them to say ‘yes’) and then again, there are those artists who somehow find their way to the Wild Hare Club and feel a kindred spirit and so ask me to play. Jenny Wren and Her Borrowed Wings are among the latter. I have no idea how they came across the WHC but I am sure glad they did.
Hailing from the flatlands of the other side of the country (Essex and Suffolk), the trio play acoustic rhythm and blues, stripped back and blushed with country. Their original songs draw on the very best parts of the roots/Americana traditions and are strong enough to sound both instantly familiar but fresh. Over the plucked notes of a heartbeat double bass, dancing dirt guitars and harmony vocals provide subtle musical colourings to Jenny’s soulful lead. This evening pour yourself a tumbler of your favourite poison and take a listen. They’re smooth and mellow - and I mean that in a good, Glengoyne kind of way.
