Sister Cookie - Black Rose of the Blues

Despite all the bad things that have happened in the world, 2021 has been a vintage year for Sister Cookie.

I, like many people, first heard her when she won Record Store Day and Sound Performance’s Unsigned competition, The panel of judges said that Sister Cookie has “The most original sound. Like Little Richard, Mark Ronson, Nina Simone and Nick Cave all got locked in a New Orleans speakeasy.” This may be over-stating it a little, but essentially it means Sister Cookie’s got the RIGHT STUFF.

Old sounds – new tricks. From London via Lagos, Sister Cookie is a self-taught pianist who has taken her time writing the honest and raw songs about pain, heartbreak, suffering that together comprise her debut album which is due for  a full release on 1st April 2022. It’s timeless music which takes you on an eclectic excursion into the roots & fruits of black music, instantly familiar but fresh-sounding too.

Sensuous, seductive and moody, Sister Cookie has been receiving numerous accolades from music tastemakers such as Robert Elms and Craig Charles and importantly, some serious radio airtime courtesy of broadcasters Cerys Matthews and Mark Radcliffe on BBC Radio 2 & 6Music.

On the strength of singles such as (You're Never More Than) Seven Feet Away and Crucify, there’s no doubt in my mind that Sister Cookie is destined for bigger things. For this reason, now is exactly the right time to catch this chanteuse and her cracking band at the Wild Hare Club, the nearest thing in atmosphere in these parts to that mythical New Orleans speakeasy!
